Factors To Consider When Hiring A Lawyer

February 08, 2022 | 3 Minute Read

When I was younger, I used to see rich and powerful people on TV shows and movies talk about having their own legal representation. At the time, having a lawyer seemed to be a symbol of luxury. Kind of like having a Porsche or a Rolls Royce. However, in this day and age, it is imperative for everyone to have a lawyer. It is not just a status symbol anymore but a necessity  because whether we like it or not, there will eventuality be a situation where you will have to consider legal counsel.

However, there are several factors to consider before you hire a lawyer.

  • Knowledge and experience.

The first and perhaps most important factor to consider when looking to hire a lawyer is how knowledgeable he/she is. Unfortunately, there a lot of posers out here trying to make a quick buck and if you are not careful, you can find yourself swindled of your hard earned money. So, ensure that you hire a lawyer from a reputable agency or if you choose to go with a freelancer, schedule a meeting and ask as many questions as it would take to get you feeling comfortable about hiring them. It is also paramount to keep in mind that law is one of those professions where experience is more important than the success rate. While you would want to consider a newbie for your case just to give them a chance, you would have more peace of mind if you worked with a lawyer who has handled cases like the one you are presenting to them.

  • Character.

Do your background check on your preferred lawyer and make sure that he/she has both experience and a clean record. Hiring someone known for professional misconduct would be detrimental to your case especially if it is one that takes some time before it is solved. It is also important to find someone you feel comfortable discussing sensitive information with.

  • Client reviews.

When looking up information about your prospective lawyer, testimonials of former clients could serve as a great baseline to your decision making process. If you come across several negative reviews about a lawyer, the best thing would be for you to look for other representation. Customer experience is a big part of an attorney client relationship and if you come across reports of someone not having a good relationship with their clients, then you should see that as a big red flag.

  • Legal fees.

The last thing to consider is how much the lawyer is going to cost as well as the mode of payment. If this is your first time seeking legal representation, you should know that attorneys are flexible when it comes to their fees. Some have an hourly rate which may end up being costly in the long run but some may settle on a fixed price that can be paid in instalments. The latter would be the better option if you are working on a tight budget.

Choosing a lawyer or legal firm such as Unite Legal to represent you is an important decision and definitely not an easy one to make. After making all the considerations listed above, you should be able to not only be confident in the person or firm you have chosen, but also be comfortable to have any communication with them.
